<image:title>Books To Read - Living Books Our Family Treasures - Living books are the books that tell stories, have a conversational tone and are usually written by one passionate author. Living books are exciting page turners and are the kind that make your children ask for “just one more chapter!”</image:title>

<image:caption>We read mostly picture books at this point in our lives! My children age range is from 9 down to 1 so we love to be absorbed in colorful illustrations when reading books! Some of my favorite books to read are from modern authors like Joy Clarkson and Jim LaMarche. Older authors like Beatrix Potter and Shel Silverstein also grace our bookshelves. With living books there is a place for older classics and modern reads as well!</image:caption>

<image:title>Books To Read - Living Books Our Family Treasures - Here are a few book recommendations from my family to yours. Living board, picture and chapter books are the ones I am sharing! My children’s ages range is from 9 to 1 so we do a lot more picture books than anything else right now!</image:title>

<image:caption>I do a lot of reading aloud chapter books but my oldest also loves to read chapter books now too. Many times when I start a chapter book for the whole family, my oldest will grab the book and finish it without me knowing lol! We currently just finished Stuart Little and it captivated even my 4 year olds attention and he told back to me how Stuart “pressed a wrong button on the car at the dentists and it became invisible!” I am loving this chapter book read aloud life that is beginning in our home!</image:caption>

<image:title>Quilting Resources - Quilting Resources To Get Started - + For Binding + Finishing Quilt: This is just an amazing video for binding! It’s from Missouri Star Quilt Co. YT channel: https://youtu.be/0vCWpxBRs20 Another helpful video is this starting around 22 min for the binding! https://youtu.be/Eq3koiH4B8M I usually use a 2.5” binding! It gives me plenty of fabric to work with to pull over the edges!</image:title>

<image:title>Quilting Resources - Quilting Resources To Get Started - + For Hand Stitiching: The first time I hand quilted I watched this video from Suzy Quilts, it really led me through everything! https://youtu.be/IdmnMhcA6dI I like to use sashiko needles, they are a longer style, perfect for hand quilting. I use sashiko thread for a more chunky hand stitched look.</image:title>

<image:title>Quilting Resources - Quilting Resources To Get Started - + Quilt Top: I generally use a template/pattern! I have done one that I purchased on Craftsy and another from Folkway Studio (Toad and Sew, Suzy Quilts all have templates too!) I use the fabric I have on hand and also have purchased from Fabric Worm and Hobby Lobby. I have my eyes on Pasadena Quilt Studio too though and may end up purchasing fabric from there! Fabric can also be thrifted! Even an old sheet can be cut up to piece into a quilt. I used my machine to piece together the quilt top! You can do this by hand but for the sake of time, I just use my machine. My sewing machine is called Singer Simple</image:title>

<image:title>Quilting Resources - Quilting Resources To Get Started - + Supplies: An acrylic measuring square ruler is helpful! A Hera marker to mark your lines to stitch is great! A Rotary cutter, this is great for when you are cutting fabric! I really love my Singer sewing scissors, they work great! A seam ripper - you might need this especially in those early days of quilting and sewing! A machine (I have a to make your quilt top but if not just hand stitch it!) I really love my Singer Simple!</image:title>

<image:caption>Crispus Attucks: Black Leader of Colonial Patriots by Dharathula H. Millender is the story about a boy who became a sailor and was one of the first involved in the American Revolution. I am excited to dive into this one with my boys! Native American History For Kids by Karen Bush Gibson will be a slower read for us. There is a lot of information in this book but it will be a good one to intertwine with the rest of the year also! There’s activities too which is great!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ox-Cart Man by Donald Hall and Illustrated by Barbara Cooney is a book that shows a full year process of a homestead - how one family grows and makes items to sell at a market once a year and also to live off of. It has lovely illustrations and reminds me of what perhaps the early 1800’s would have been like for a farmer and homesteader! Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder is a classic, it is essentially a very detailed story of the life of farmers and homesteaders and follows the story of Almonzo. It shares in detail how homesteaders did things back in the 1840’s. We will slowly read through this for about 3-4 weeks.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Very First Americans by Cara Ashrose is where we’ll start this year. I thrifted this book a couple of years ago and found that it is a very honest and good view into the life of the first Americans - the indigenous people to North America. Leif The Lucky by Ingri & Edgar Parin D’Alaire is a colorful illustration about the first known European who came to the Americas. (Not pictured) Encounter by Jane Yolen is a truthful look into the Columbus era. I want my children to have an honest view of history, the good and the bad.</image:caption>

<image:title>Classical Conversations - U.S. History Living Books And Spine - Let’s talk spines!</image:title>
<image:caption>This year is Cycle 3 in Classical Conversations and it is going to be all about U.S. History! CC provides history sentences and geography memory work for 24 weeks during the school year. We will use the CC material as our spine and add in The Story of the Thirteen Colonies and The Great Republic by H.A. Guerber and edited by Memoria Press plus The Story of the World Volume 3 and 4 by Susan Wise Bauer. These will be some of the main texts that we use and then from there we will add in more living books to give a more comprehensive historical look at U.S. History.</image:caption>

<image:title>Homeschool Life - Homeschool Family Subjects 2023-2024 - Picture Study is up next! Currently we are studying Monat - this is a short activity that I will try to implement daily! We look at the painting, try to visualize the painting in the minds eye and learn about the artist. The boys will make thier own impressionist painting in a couple of weeks too! Other artists we will be studying this year are: John Singer Sargent, Picasso, O’Keefe, Rockwell. Ambleside Online and A Humble Place all have fantastic resources for Picture study! I recommend checking them out! Memoria Press also has various Art Card Prints that I really like to have around the house!</image:title>

<image:title>Homeschool Life - Homeschool Family Subjects 2023-2024 - What is a family subject?</image:title>
<image:caption>A family subject allows us to accomplish multiple subjects as a family together - rather than individually. Our family subjects take place at two different points in our day, things I call: Morning Time and Poetry Tea Time. We start every morning with our Morning Time and each mid-morning we have snacks over Poetry Tea Time, according to my 7 and 4 year old Poetry Tea Time is their favorite “subject”, that gave me a chuckle! Math and Language Arts are done separately between and after our family subject times.</image:caption>

<image:title>Homeschool Life - Homeschool Family Subjects 2023-2024 - Sing A Song Of Seasons Nature Poem of the Day is where we start off Poetry Tea Time! We’ve used this book for about a year and a half and it’s just lovely! (Photo is below!) A.A. Milne Poems are up next, I usually read 2 or 3 poems! Other poets we will be studying this year will include Christina Rossetti, William Blake, Walter De La Mare and Wordsworth. Ambleside Online has many free poems and bios about poets! I highly recommend using this resource! I will have the boys do copy work this year with poetry also! Also, I leave freedom to explore a topic that they want to look up — for example, today the poem talked about the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and we weren’t sure what that looked like, so we watched a very interesting YT video on it! Making connections and helping your kids make connections is so important!</image:title>

<image:caption>This bin has manipulatives and a book. It is very simple but there is SO much building and playing that can happen with this bin! My older boys will play with Picasso tiles for hours so I know it will keep the littles busy at least for a while! The books called “Found” is about Psalm 23, it is a sweet book that’s perfect for my little guys. <image:caption>These bins will more than likely be ever changing! But as we start off our homeschool year, I am glad my little ones will have something in the mornings to keep their little hands and minds busy while I work with their older brothers! The little ones will also enjoy doing our morning time together with us! What a gift it is to homeschool even with needy little ones and lots of interruptions. Thankful to be able to homeschool my children despite the hard days!</image:caption>
